April 24, 2019 - Denim Day Wear Jeans with a Cause
When: April 24, 2019 from 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm Where: Dr. Maya Angelou Community HS 300 E 53rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90011 On Denim Day, the "South Central Girls Empower" team hosted a lunch event at Dr. Maya Angelou Community HS. During the event, everybody was welcomed to share through writing their opinions and stories on sexual violence. Also, they had the option to take a pledge to stand up against sexual violence. People participating in the event received hearts of kindness (cut-out hearts with inspiring quotes) and "denim day" inspired button pins. Everybody was strongly encouraged to wear jeans to raise awareness on rape and sexual assault.
April 27 - It Ends With Us Dr. Maya Angelou Community Resource Fair
When: April 27, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Where: Dr. Maya Angelou Community HS 300 E 53rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90011 On Saturday April 27, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm the Dr. Maya Angelou Community Resource Fair took place at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School. Within the event, the South Central Girls Empower group had an informational booth - "It Ends With Us". Our booth provided information on sexual assault and tips on how to address these issues. We also promoted safety and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (April). During the event we had educational games, such as the wheel of consent, which consisted in participants getting a random scenario from which they had to interpret whether there was consent or not in the situation. Participants received goody bags and snacks!
